Natural Gas Prices In 2010

Natural Gas Powers Texas




According to the US Dept. of Energy, Texas produces and consumes more electricity than any other state. Over half of Texas energy comes from natural gas-powered generation plants. Texas produces 25% of the nations natural gas and is the largest producer; storing and supplying natural gas via pipeline for all regions of the country. Yet while Texas has large reserves of low grade coal, most of what is burned in its coal-fired plants is brought in via train from Wyoming and Montana.




So, it makes sense for Texas electric power generators to rely more on the supply of natural gas in our back yard rather than waiting for the next 10,000 tons of coal to roll in from Wyoming. Natural gas burns cleaner than coal and does not leave behind large amounts of cinder and ash that require proper disposal.




In the past, natural gas was usually uncovered when drilling for oil. Many middle eastern oil companies commonly used natural gas to push oil out from deposits in the earth and then let the gas burn off (called flaring). This was because there was neither large local demand for natural gas, nor a way to safely transport it overseas to markets that wanted it.




In Texas, the practice was very different. Natural gas and oil have been twin commodities that helped build Texas. Natural gas pipelines stretch in all directions from Texas and it has long been used throughout the US for heat, light, and electrical generation. So, its little wonder that in this country its price has long been bound to oil, a commodity in a very volatile market where prices are often shaped by world events. For this reason, power generating companies have paid more for natural gas than coal, nuclear, and wind. Because it is the most expensive and so heavily relied upon, the price of natural gas determines the price of electricity.




When the Wave Broke




Throughout 2007 and into 2008, petroleum and natural gas prices rose due to a popular tide of speculative investment. This drove resource development and innovation in natural gas technologies to bring gas reserves to market. Among these:




The growing Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) trade is expected to increase at 6.7 percent per year until 2020. New fleets of inexpensively built ships and refineries expanded the industry worldwide. LNG now involves 15 exporting countries and 17 importing countries, including the US.




Qatar announced its goal to develop both its Northfield natural gas reserve production (from roughly 54 billion cubic feet in 1995 to 2.7 trillion cubic feet in 2008) and its Gas-to-Liquids capacity. Qatar is now the worlds largest LNG exporter.




Developments in horizontal drilling and rock fracturing techniques with high pressure water provide lower-cost access to several huge deposits of natural gas trapped in common shale. These include the Marcellus shale bed and the Barnett shale in Texas (much of it under Ft. Worth) which has been estimated at holding 26 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and is producing 2 billion cubic feet per day.




In July, 2008, the petroleum/natural gas price wave peaked. Gasoline surged to over $4.00 per gallon and natural gas prices to $13.69 per billion BTU (mmBTU). The cost of Texas electricity exploded.




Inundated with high fuel prices, consumers all across America cut their travel and their energy use. In the fall of 2008, the economy contracted so severely that businesses laid off workers or closed. They stopped using natural gas to heat their buildings and stopped needing electricity to power their machinery. This helped drive down the price of oil, gasoline, and natural gas. But in the case of natural gas, the big developments in LNG supply and natural gas shale brought enormous amounts of natural gas out of the ground. Ready to use, it now lay idle in pipelines, tanks, and ships at sea. With plenty of supply but no demand, the price sank further.




One year after the price peak, the DOEs EIA reported in its weekly natural gas storage report for August, 14, 2009:




Working gas in storage was 3,204 Billion cubic feet (Bcf) as of Friday, August 14, 2009, according to EIA estimates Stocks were 562 Bcf higher than last year at this time and 513 Bcf above the 5-year average of 2,691 Bcf.




By September, 2009, natural gas lost over 80% of its July 2008 value and had plummeted to $2.409 per mmBTU. Texas electric rates fell as well.




Big Supply + Little Demand = Low Price




Because of booming US domestic supply, natural gas price tumble has decoupled it from oils price. As analyst Fadel Gheit put it, [O]il is a global commodity; gas is a regional commodity. You can have a huge discrepancy in gas prices from country to country, from continent to continent, because of a lack of adequate transportation the means of shipping to take gas from where its found in abundance to where its needed.




As a regional commodity now, present US domestic natural gas prices are somewhat insulated versus shocks from international problems. New shale deposits being drilled throughout the lower 48 states provide a more stable supply and stable pricing. As a result, LNG imports to the US are dropping, prompting the United Nations International Energy Agencys chief economist, Fatih Birol, to forecast a world-wide natural gas glut continuing through 2015.




In an interview with Bloomberg News, energy commodities analyst Stephen Schork painted this picture of the current natural gas supply: We have more gas than we know what to do with in the U.S.; we have more waterborne gas floating around the worlds oceans that doesnt have a home.




When natural gas prices began their slide, many natural gas companies capped their wells and cut their production. The EIA recently reported in its Short Term Energy Outlook:




Total marketed natural gas production is estimated to have increased by 3.7 percent in 2009, despite a 59-percent decline in the working natural gas rig count from September 2008 to July 2009.




Even Qatar announced it will not pursue any new development in its North field reserve for another four years.




Right now, the two big drivers of US consumption are its winter and its economy. This winter, an early cold snap increased heating demands for much of the country and even caused a brief $1 price increase. Though faltering, the US economy has improved somewhat since September, 2008. Because of the slight contraction in productivity and the early cold weather, natural gas prices have risen from their September, 2009 low but they are still 50% lower than their peak in 2008. The EIA statistic for the January 27, 2010 price at the Henry Hub in New York ($5.42 mmBTU) is 14% higher than the same date last year ($4.75).




The big new for 2010 is its still a natural gas buyers market. With storage levels still at 5 year highs, enhanced domestic production capabilities, and slow consumption growth, prices are not expected to rise dramatically through 2010. EIA projects that the natural gas spot price at the Henry Hub will increase to an average of $5.25 mmBTU in 2010, which is $1.27 more than the 2009 average of $3.98 mmBTU. Remember, this is an average price; seasonal increases will occur, especially during the summer cooling months in Texas when power demand is at its height.




For Texas electricity consumers, this means that energy prices will remain low through for the rest of the year, though there will be some fluctuation due to seasonal demand, as stated. However, one thing about the near future is certain: consumption of natural gas will increase as economic conditions improve. Businesses will need more people as they will get back to running equipment and machinery and they will all use more energy. As consumption rises, more generators will burn natural gas to meet that need. Natural gas prices will rise. And so will the price of Texas electricity.




Long Term Solutions for the Texas Energy Consumer




The best thing an electricity consumer in Texas has right now is energy choice. If you sign on to a two year (24 month) plan now, you can lock in the current 2010 rate through 2012. Switching between now and spring when rates are low could save you hundreds of dollars over the next two years. Why? Because you can take advantage of a long term fixed energy plan that locks in the current low energy price. In the near future, the EIA projects that prices will increase in 2011, averaging $6.00 mmBTU as the existing surplus shrinks in the face of a rebounding economy. Thats a 13% increase in price. Right now, if your energy plan is locked in at .114 cent/kWh for 1500 kWh per month, youre paying about $171/month. But in 2011 given a 13% average increase, your bill could jump to $193.23/month. Thats a difference of $22.23/month or $266.76 for the year.

According to an estimate realized by Federpneus, the Italian association of specialist tire dealers, this summer about 25 millions Italians will be traveling by car. This high number is made even more significant by another interesting datum: the average distance traveled by Italian people is increasing in comparison to last summer, from 390 to 402 kilometers. The trend to use the car more and more, also for quite long travels, should result in a greater care of one's car, motor home or motorbike, and before leaving everybody should always check the conditions of tires.
The good conditions of tires is essential to travel safe: tires, indeed, are the only point of contact between vehicles and roads, and if you want to avoid dangerous situations while traveling, you should have the tires of your car or motorbike checked from time to time. One of the most important things to monitor is pressure, which can also influence the consumption of your car or motorbike. Before leaving, it is advisable to have the pressure monitored by a specialized tire dealers, who has all the necessary instruments to make a complete and thorough check, letting us travel in a safer way. Make a check before going on holiday is even more important if you travel by a motor home, a caravan or another vehicle that you only use now and then, perhaps only for summer holidays, and that you do not ride for most of the year.
An evidence of the importance of the good conditions of tires when you travel is given by "Vacanze Sicure" (Safe holidays), a campaign launched by Assogomma, Federpneus and the traffic police. From April to June, before the "summer exodus", in five Italian regions (Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Puglia), about 10,000 controls have been made on the tires of cars, trucks, light commercial vehicles and motor homes to verify the presence of slick, non certified, uneven or damaged tires. As far as slick tires is concerned, the results of the control have been positive: while a survey carried out in 2003 had resulted in a percentage of 8-10% of slick tires, the percentage in 2010 has been 3-5%. Also the number of non certified tires is decreasing, while some tires had visible damages and cuts, which might undermine the car efficiency and the safety of travelers. If you notice that your tires are damaged, it is always advisable to have them replaced, especially if you are leaving for a quite long travel. The percentage of uneven tires has increased: although traffic rules require that tires mounted on the same axle have the same features and size, 4% of cars checked in 2010 had uneven tires. Many people, in particular, use winter tires also when the season is over. But you need to keep in mind that winter tires make their best performances when temperature is below 7°, and when it gets warmer it is advisable to replace them with other types of tires.

The walls seem to be so thin, that you think the other people are in your bathroom or will break through the ceiling at any moment. For 100000rp it's ok, although I should've taken the room for 75000rp with the toilet and shower outside. But after that boattrip I really wanted a room with a shower although the water here is damn cold. Ruteng is at around 1500m surrounded by an active vulcano. The city is not really beautiful, but the surrounding rice terasses are worth a view. I took a long walk round the countryside, up a hill where after every turn a holy picture was showing the story of Jesus carrying the cross up until he was taken off the cross (at the top of the hill). On the top there's a big shrine showing a status of Maria. After that I went looking for a waterfall which was supposed to be 6km further down the road. I got to see some spectacular views of the rice fields and indonesian dschungle and all the locals and kiddies coming up saying "Hello Mister" and being really astonished when I answered in Baha Indonesia. Went cross country through the dschungle and open fields until a bemo (bus) picked ...

Founded by visionary Hadi Sunyoto, who wished to create a space to preserve the disappearing art of puppetry and mask-making, the House of Mask of Puppets displays its magnificent and rare collection in a number of traditional Javanese Huts called Joglo. Prior to 2006, the exhibition spaces were private places for household activities, but the name "house" remained to signify the new museum. Situated on the beautiful landscape of Kubu Bingin Cultural Village in Gianyar, the House holds the largest collection of masks and puppets in the world. With over 4500 pieces from countries such as Indonesia, Africa, Malaysia, China, Myanmar, Cambodia and Japan, the House can engage historians and culture enthusiasts for hours!
Current exhibitions include rare masks and puppets from around the world.These masks are the faces of commoners and great kings, demons and saints, beastly creatures, and divine deities and historical figures that mostly reflect an appreciation toward Hindu religion. Some of the most beautiful masks are from the region of Madura which feature beautiful garlands hand-carved around the face (pictured in the main image "Visit Museum Year 2010")

The featured golden is from Bali. This beautiful mask depicts an image of Jero Luh, who is also called Barong Landung Luh, a Chinese princess in the Dalem Balingkang story.

There are some truly rare masks as well, including two masks that remain in their original "bark" form and carved only with two slits for vision.

The House showcases the largest collection of Wayan Kulit or shadow puppets in the world. As well, they display the largest collection of wooden carved puppets (left). Despite his early start as a musical talent, Andrea Bocelli came onto the professional music scene relatively late in life.  He decided to go to school to train in law, and after he completed law school he spent a year as a court-appointed lawyer, while still pursuing his musical interests by performing at piano bars in the evenings.  He was discovered by agent and manager Caterina Caselli, who gave him his first chance at great fame in 1992 by preparing a demo tape and presenting it to Italian rock star Zucchero, who was looking for a tenor to accompany him.  Famous Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti heard the tape and was impressed by Bocelli's talent, urging Zucchero to record with him.  Bocelli accompanied Zucchero on his European concert tour in 1993, which got him exposed to the president of Sugar Records, a music label based in Milan.  The president was impressed and signed the musical newcomer, and Andrea Bocelli's career was launched.  Since that time he has won numerous awards and honors, including being named one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in 1998.
Andrea Bocelli was born in 1958 and grew up on his family's farm.  He was a musical child, learning to play the piano at six and progressing to the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, harp, guitar, and drums.  Even becoming totally blind due to glaucoma at the age of 12 didn't dampen his musical spirit, and he won his first song competition at age 14.

Julia Mancuso came home to a fantastic "Welcome Home" shindig at Northstar Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe. The festivities honoring Julia Mancuso, the Two Time Silver Medalist in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, kicked off on Sunday February 27, 2010 and never slowed down throughout the day. Northstar was the funkiest trip we've taken this season and definitely the best time we've enjoyed this year and the after-hours festivities kept going into the evening hours for non-stop enjoyment. Northstar supplied all the merriment with live music, outstanding food, spirits, entertainment for the whole family and a wonderful awards show, there was never a dull moment at Northstar's Olympic toast to Julia Mancuso.
I've got to give credit where credit is due and Northstar put on one heck of a great time for Julia Mancuso and her fans of all ages. Live bands (Jo Mama & Colorshow) played all day in the Village Stage at Northstar for anxious Mancuso fans waiting for their opportunity to congratulate the Ladies' Downhill and Super Combined Silver medalist. Just watching Julia rock out with "Colorshow" was pretty dang cool (in a sexy sort of way) and feeling the energy of her numerous fans sway to the music was epic. The live music wasn't all that Northstar supplied, the Apex Bungy Trampoline and Ice Skating Rink in the center of the Village at Northstar was additional fun for the whole family. Simply put, there was more than enough fun and entertainment throughout the day at Northstar Ski Resort during the Julia Mancuso Welcome Home Festival.
Northstar really did a wonderful job of opening up their hearts to Julia and her many fans and from the moment we arrived at the Julia Mancuso Festival up to the moment we left we had the time of our lives, being able to see Olympic Medalist Mancuso and having the good fortune of Northstar's plush entertainment was more than we could have ever hoped for. They really rolled out the red carpet for everyone, even for canine companions. Yes, Northstar is definitely a "Dog-Friendly" world class resort. And it was pretty dang sweet having my 11 year old Border Collie "Cody" getting to meet Lake Tahoe Hero Julia Mancuso (Cody is currently trading in his Frisbee for some new K2s).
The awards ceremony was highlighted by watching Lake Tahoe local hero and two time silver medalist Julia Mancuso proudly hoist her Olympic medals into the warm Tahoe air, it was enough to take your breath away, and an experience I will not soon forget. So, the festival has come and gone, but come on out and explore awesome slopes right now at Northstar. The snow pack is terrific and we're currently expecting more snowfall this weekend. Enjoy Northstar's Terrain Parks and Cross Country, Telemark skiing as well as Boarding the Pipes and Downhill skiing. Oh, and the Kid's Adventure Parks will keep 'em busy having fun all day long. Thank you again Northstar and thank you Julia Mancuso for your hard work and world class athleticism in bringing home Two Silver Medals!!!
