In 2006, Andrea Bocelli persuaded the municipality of his hometown, Lajatico, to build an outdoor theater, christened the “Teatro del Silenzio”, the Theater of Silence. Despite his early start as a musical talent, Andrea Bocelli came onto the professional music scene relatively late in life. He decided to go to school to train in law, and after he completed law school he spent a year as a court-appointed lawyer, while still pursuing his musical interests by performing at piano bars in the evenings. He was discovered by agent and manager Caterina Caselli, who gave him his first chance at great fame in 1992 by preparing a demo tape and presenting it to Italian rock star Zucchero, who was looking for a tenor to accompany him. Famous Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti heard the tape and was impressed by Bocelli's talent, urging Zucchero to record with him. Bocelli accompanied Zucchero on his European concert tour in 1993, which got him exposed to the president of Sugar Records, a music label based in Milan. The president was impressed and signed the musical newcomer, and Andrea Bocelli's career was launched. Since that time he has won numerous awards and honors, including being named one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in 1998.
Andrea Bocelli was born in 1958 and grew up on his family's farm. He was a musical child, learning to play the piano at six and progressing to the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, harp, guitar, and drums. Even becoming totally blind due to glaucoma at the age of 12 didn't dampen his musical spirit, and he won his first song competition at age 14.
