Mexico Travel: Excursions abreast Morelia - Quiroga, Tzintzuntzan, Janitzio, Patzcuaro

Mysecond day in Morelia entailed a full-day excursion to nearby Lake Patzcuaro. After an enjoyable country drive we made our first stop in Quiroga, a commercial country town that is well known for its carnitas, exquisitely roasted tender pork that is rolled up inside a soft tortilla delicious! Hundreds of vendors sell clothing, fruits, vegetables and all sorts of trinkets. After a stop in the historic town of Tzintzuntzan, the former capital of the Purepecha empire, we drove to the shores of Lake Patzcuaro and took a boat to the island of Janitzio, an island that is crowned by a 50 metre high statue of Jose Maria Morelos, one of Mexicos most important indepence heros. Janitizo is most well known for its exuberant celebrations of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). After climbing up a series of steep steps flanked by shops selling handicrafts and local food, we reached the top of the island and even lined up to climb the inside of the statue. Once we had reached the top of the statue we were able to peer out over the lake from the stretched-out fist of Jose Maria Morelos. Our final stop for the day was in the historic town of Patzcuaro where we grabbed a bite to eat and took a walk through the historic downtown. We visited the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Salud as well as the Casa de los Once Patios (House of the Eleven Courtyards), a former nunnery that has been turned into a centre of culture and arts and crafts. A major player in the tourism industry, Cancun has been plagued by some big business in the recent years and it has lost a bit of its old world charm. This has done nothing to dissuade the thousands that come here every year. Be careful to plan for the hurricane season though, there is little that can be done when one strikes.

Cozumel is a place that many people have ignored over the years and that is good news for those that travel there. Big companies have not found this site to be very hospitable and that means that it is mainly natives that run the sites and attractions. There is a good many places where you can have lots of fun for very little.

Guadalajara brings to mind some of the old ruins of the past. There is many historical attractions here and the natives will be sure to please all that come in. The prices are very reasonable and the food is great all over the area.

Mexico Guadalajara Travel: Impressions of Tlaquepaque & Tonala

Mexico, particularly the historic, colonial heartland of this country, continues to fascinate me. It is also the perfect winter getaway for sun-starved Canadians, and I thought another visit to Mexico was in order. So on February 3, 2010 I arrived in the pouring rain in Guadalajara, the nations 2nd largest city. Fortunately the weather cleared up the next day and I was able to check out the scenic downtown of Tlaquepaque as well as the arts and crafts market of Tonala, both located in the southern part of Guadalajara. On a luxury Internet-equipped bus I headed to my first weekend excursion from February 5 to 7 to Guanajuato, a gorgeous silver mining town and UNESCO World Heritage Site about 4 hours from Guadalajara. My gracious hosts Sujei and Roberto showed me around their city for 2.5 days: from the silver mine La Valenciana with its magnificent baroque church, to the unique street tunnels that connect the city underground, the El Pipila monument overlooking Guanajuato's colourful houses, to the estudiantina - a walking night-time concert through the scenic alleyways of Guanajuato, the gorgeous little squares with their bars and restaurants to the rather scary Mummies Museum - Guanajuato is a real treasure. I even went mountain-biking in the sierra above Guanajuato and enjoyed the sweeping views over the Mexican mountainscape. Is it Safe to Travel to Mexico?

Earlier this year, the United States government cautioned college students who are headed to Mexico during their spring breaks about a spike in violent crime there. While the State Department did not advise against travel to Mexico, it did recommend that travelers use prudent judgment to minimize risk of becoming a victim.

While lawlessness in Mexico is not new, there has been a spike in criminal behavior south of the border that travelers need to consider. Tourists to Mexican cities near the border should be particularly vigilant about their personal safety and exercise prudent judgment. Our government also warns that the southern Mexican state of Chiapas may not be a prime tourist locale as there are armed rebels and gangs in many regions.

One thing common to many spring-breakers is they often choose excitement and entertainment over caution and common sense. This shows that a college education doesn't guarantee the exercise of good judgment. When in Mexico, as in all foreign countries, be aware of your surroundings. Only enter legitimate businesses. Use main roads and drive during daylight hours. Carry a cellular phone at all times and make sure it will operate in your destinations. Keep important phone numbers with you including the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City and the U.S. Consulates and Consular Agencies throughout the country. Leave jewelry and expensive clothing items at home which might tempt unsavory individuals to acquire them unlawfully.

Some folks accused the Americans of hyperventilating over this issue pointing out that the vast majority of tourists to Mexico travel safely. While this is true, the increase in violence and corruption in law enforcement has been well documented on both sides of the border.

We suggest that our overworked college scholars consult with a trained travel doctor before they finalize their itineraries. Choose your destinations wisely. Choose safety first.

Guanajuato, Mexico Tourist Season 2008

In the middle of the night when the bombing (Day of the Dead fireworks) began and I was startled awake by my three-foot, straight-up jump out of bed, I suddenly remembered I had forgotten to write my annual article about this year's Guanajuato Tourist Season! In case you don't know, I have been writing a special-interest article each year about the Gringo Invasion of Guanajuato. These invaders are called tourists. More specifically, these conquering travelers are commonly known in Guanajuato as Gringo Tourists. And to be even more scientific about it, Gringo is the Genus and not the breed of Tourists.

The word Genus, according to Webster means, "a class, kind, or group marked by common characteristics or by one common characteristic."

What I am talking about is the specific Species or Breed of Tourists taught in Tourism School or the science of Touristology called The American Gringo Tourist. To understand this better, think of the dog breed, The Great Dane. It is a domestic dog. Think also of the Chihuahua that also is a domestic dog. However, it doesn't take a genius to see the vast and magnificent difference between the two. The same goes with your ordinary Canadian, European, Australian, and Oriental Tourists. All are tourists but when you compare them with The American Gringo Tourist, the differences are, well, vast to say the least.

To simplify, think of Americans as a specific breed of tourist.

What I have done in years past is try to apply very carefully and with much forethought the scientific principles of ethnology - a science that deals with the division of human beings into races and their origins, distribution, relations, and characteristics (Thank-you Mr. Webster).

In doing so I would venture out daily into the wild and wooly wilderness of tourist traps like sidewalk cafes, boutiques, churches, park benches, and observe and record how The American Tourist acts. My results? Startling!

In past articles I would observe and record things like shrieking harpies (always females followed subserviently by obedient males) screaming in front of sidewalk cafes, "I know you speak English and are pretending you don't." This was by far the most common thing observed and recorded.

Next, I would see entire groups of this most common Breed of Gringo eating at small, out-of-the-way eateries getting so bombed on booze that entire groups of American Gringos would become falling-down drunk. There would always be someone in those groups, usually a male, who would find the brains God gave him to try and flag a cab. However, this blasted soul would soon have an American Gringo lapse and begin cursing wilding and giving the finger to each cab that passed him, already occupied with a fare, for not stopping for his "Here I am...American Tourist...HEAR ME ROAR!"

Finally, I would sit in the plazas and listen to loud bellowings come out of restaurants, "I ordered a taco!" or "You call this a taco?" or "Don't you have Taco Bell here?" It always was loud protestations about tacos.

I would make many minor observations too. Mostly these were carefully scribbled notes of how American Tourists would pitch public fits over where or what to eat, where to go next, or wailings to the point of almost swooning when they exited their hotels to discover that they could not find anyone who spoke English. Sometimes I could hear them ask one another, "Is everyone here really Mexican?"

These folks would do one of two things but never both. They would either run back to their hotels and in under three minutes come back out with packed bags to head to the airport for Puerto Vallarta, or they would join the shrieking harpies' battle cry (see above).

Well, I am happy as a peach that what I have to report for Guanajuato, Mexico's 2008 Tourist Season is none of the above.

That's right! Though it appears there were more tourists than ever, even of the American Gringo Breed, that showed up in town this year, we saw none of the behavior that spurred the naming of American Gringos as The Ugly American! Isn't that swell?

This year, the difference seems overwhelmingly to be that they hired English-Speaking Mexicans to take them by the hand all over the city. It also appears that the tour guides made a better effort than before to advertise their services and unbelievably, the American Gringos took them up on their offers to show them a good time.

Everywhere I looked I saw happy-faced American Gringos frolicking up and down the streets of Guanajuato holding hands with their bilingual tour guides and all merrily singing Canta no Llores.

Is this a good omen of many more Tourist Seasons to come? I don't know. But, as always, I will be here to watch and record from park benches, small cafes, small darkened corners in bars and grills, surreptitiously making notes for the Guanajuato Tourist Season 2009.

MTV Spring Break Parties in Acapulco Mexico in 2010

With past locations being Panama City Beach in Florida and Cancun, Mexico, MTV Spring Break is always at the hottest spot for fun. Every year they bring their camera crews to an exotic location during Spring Break and film on location. This year, in 2010 they will be filming in Acapulco, Mexico. This is a fun time, even if you are just watching for the couch in your living room.

Thousands of teens are recorded dancing to top bands and singers that come down for concerts. It is an event that is looked forward to every year. MTV Spring Break is a much anticipated event that happens every year for college students that are looking to have a great time.

MTV pulls out all of the stops each year. They offer fun parties, concerts, dancing, contests and more. College students from all over the world come to MTV's Spring Break each year and have a great time. If you are thinking about attending in 2010 then you need to make your arrangements now. It get filled up quickly.

Since the beach front that they will be filming at is stretched with many hotels, there will be plenty of rooms for college students to stay. MTV will be staying in the Playa Suites hotel on the north side of the beach.

Those that are planning on attending can join one of the many scheduled concerts at the may hotels in the area. The major hotels will be having concerts and dancing of their own. With such great weather during this time of year, it will be a great time to party. The temperature is usually between seventy and eighty five degrees.

If you plan on being one of the thousands of college students attending this year's MTV Spring Break then you will need to be sure that you are careful about the local water. It is advised to drink from bottled water. This is the best way to avoid issues. Stomach problems seem to be an issue otherwise which will make the entire vacation miserable. It is also advised to be careful where you eat food. When your body is not used to the water and food in Acapulco, your stomach can bear the brunt of it. It is not always pretty.

When you go, be sure to attend the many nightclubs in the area. There are some great clubs that are planning on having some great concerts and dancing. Most do not have a closing time so you can party 24 hours if you wish. One of the most fun is the Palladium. It contains a one hundred sixty foot long wall of glass overlooking the entire beach and bay area. It is a wonderful way to see the area.

The entire week is sure to be a blast if you make sure that you plan ahead of time. Be sure to call ahead to reserve a room so that you do not miss out. Rooms book quite quickly. It is sure to be the greatest week of the year so be sure not to miss it. 2010 promises to be a great year for MTV. Be sure to check it out in person or online.
