Top 10 Travel Tips When Inter-Railing in Europe

1.    Travel light - Getting to and from railway stations and hostels can be a real challenge with a large backpack. Take as little as possible to give you that edge when you need to run to catch that last train or hostel bed.

2.    Don't buy the pass! If you are travelling in Eastern Europe it can be cheaper to get by without the expensive rail pass. This will not be the case in Western Europe where your pass will be cheap in comparison to local fares.

3.    Don't miss the East - This is far cheaper than the west, particularly if you avoid countries with the Euro. You can take advantage of fine restaurants at discount prices.

4.    Talk to other travellers - Find out where the highlights are and which places to avoid. You are sure to find many travellers that have just come from your next destination.

5.    Take a good guide - The Lonely Planet have a good guide for travellers on a budget. This will prove indispensible when deciding which hostel to stay in and when booking ahead.

6.    Avoid Bucharest - Limit your time in this city as Romania has many interesting places to offer including Dracula's castles in Transylvania.

7.    Learn to enjoy pizza - Pizza may prove to be your staple, particularly if you are a vegetarian in Eastern Europe. Throughout Europe, a slice of Italian style pizza is a cheap, quick lunch.

8.    Travel overnight - In Western Europe this can bring down your accommodation prices by sleeping whilst on the move. It also frees up your days to spend seeing the sights rather than travelling between them.

9.    Mix it up - Plan to divide your time between the beach, cities and rural areas of beauty.

10.    Don't forget your travel insurance!
